I'm done being a Hipocrite, I am announcing an Adventure (please comment, I'm looking for advice/feedback)

So, I’ve felt very hipocritish lately with all this talk of adventure and my blog says I like to live my life and do all these things… blah blah blah.

Well, it is true, and we may need to get a little deeper into my defenition of adventure.  But that is not the point of this post.

“Ad-Vent-ure: (according to andrew) is anything you are passionate about, anything that gets you into “flow” and anything that most people never (or simply you) have experienced or are likely to experience…  It also has that journey into the unknown thing, so a business trip at the spur of the moment to New Zealand when you’ve never been and always wanted to go, would be an adventure.  Simply put is it living more life, pushing limits and increasing your over all happiness.  You can adventure from a computer or jumping out of a plane, whicever one is more exhilirating and “gnarly” for ya.

Yep, no pants, and yes I did ride and yes it was January.

Yep, no pants, and yes I did ride and yes it was January.

For me, adventure comes in a lot of flavors.  But I wanted to announce and share an adventure that would push me to reach some goals, be fun, possibly generate revenue either for me or for some cause or for both, and inspire others to live more fully.  Most of all, I just feel like a liar for not more fully living my own philosophy.

So here it is.  I love my bike.  Since I can’t snowboard this season (I blew out my ACL wakeboarding over the summer and come about April the Dr. will let me back on the slopes.) I have decided to venture out further.  You see, in the summer, since I can’t snowboard, the closest feeling (the best way for me to get into flow) for me is to go mountain biking with good music playing on my ipod.  When snow comes, and I can’t play I had to compromise.  So here is the proof, I am riding my bike, in utah in January, in the snow.  I am riding now, and loving it.  Blue skys, right music, foggy breath and freaking cold fingers.  It’s great.

The Adventure: 1000+ mile bike ride

I have always wanted to get into riding road bikes and thought of doing triathalons, but I hate running and its not great for the knees.  Instead of killing myself for something that I hate, I would rather physically punish myself for something I love.  Biking.  SO I’ve had this goal/idea to ride my bike from Utah (home) to mexico, or california, or somewhere cool and far.  Mexico is a great choice because I’m learning spanish and it would just be cool.  There is a lot that could be done with the idea, but I am putting this up to hold myself accountable.  I don’t know exactly how it will turn out yet, I am still kind of in planning mode, but I think I need to plan out the trip and set a date and some goals.  I’m going ot be going to a lot more spinning classes at the gym in the mean time, the cold is a bit too cold sometimes.  And my bike doesn’t have anti-lock brakes, so sometimes it is too icy.  Anyway, please comment on this, tell me I am insane, crazy, or give me some pointers.

Andrew, you are not crazy, I admire you, go for it. Here are a few of the crazy things I’ve done. As a previous non-runner, at age 39, training for and completing the 85km Comrades Marathon in South Africa (4 times). Playing my first game of Polo at age 50. Breaking an arm and foot at Polo when my horse fell over and then getting on a horse with both in plaster 2 weeks later. Walking across the Zaire (Congo) border with Rwanda during the Rwanda civil war because I was on a business trip and no planes flying.

Finally after defying the Zimbabwe governments attempt to steal our farm for 3 years, getting thrown in a police cell and then having lost everything, moving to Canada with just 2 suitcases at age 54 to start a new life.

The craziest of all would be starting my business.

Sir, I salute you, your challenge is going to be far harder mentally and physically than anything I have attempted. I sincerely hope that you will be posting your progress on twitter and your blog so that your admirers can follow you and cheer you on.

    Best wishes

    Peter,
I am honored to have your comments on my blog. Sounds like I could learn a lot from you and that I would just love to hear and see your stories.

You are truly quite the adventurer to show up to Canada and make a new life for yourself, and you truly personify the idea of “Adventure-Prenuerism”

Thank you for your support, people like you will get me through!

This sounds very exciting. Recently there was a guy here in Utah who was riding his bike around the world. He started in Porto Alegre, Brazil and was on his way up to canada. He was going to jump a ship over to Russia and then ride through Asia & Europe on to Africa and back over the sea to Brazil. 8 Year trip!!!
