This is the truest way I can put it.
Free Traffic does not exist. In fact, I believe the word free can be very detrimental to your overall mindset. It is one of the most potent and powerful words in marketing, if not the most, and that is why it’s actually regulated, but I digress…
“There is no free traffic. Traffic is only either profitable or not, it is never free…”
Here’s the deal, when it comes to getting traffic to your website there is no such thing as free.
The closest thing to free would be sending a message to your email or twitter list.
Even those things are not free.
The correct way to think about it is different types of traffic are purchased with different currencies. Often times what we confuse with, “Free” is actually just a different currency, like time or content.
If you have a big following in social media, there is a 100% guarantee you did something and expended some resource to get it and to maintain it. If you’ve posted to twitter 20 times a day 5 days a week for the last 6 months, that time, attention, and energy was your cost. That traffic may have in actuality been more expensive.
If you’re going for search engine traffic, non-paid AKA organic. That is not free.
You are paying google with credibility, content and creating a site that provides the user experience that gets them to have people searching in the first place. In effect, google is saying we’ll pay you with traffic if you create stuff people like and want to see, and that is useful enough to them to keep drawing them back into our search engine.
But it’s not free.
Many times, the resource you trade for traffic that is purchased with currency other than money is time and effort, and the risk that you could be using those resources in a different way or for a higher value activity.
This is why, I like to say, sometimes free traffic is very expensive.
Not always, don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of ways that it makes a lot of sense, email lists, joint ventures, paying affiliates, etc. Just don’t forget to truly evaluate the cost. If it’s easy and free now, chances are you or someone did something that cost a good amount of some curency in the past.
The fastest and often cheapest, easiest way to buy traffic and test whether or not things are working, is to buy it with money not time.
If this is interesting to you, you’ll love something I have coming out in the near future. I’m not sure of the details yet but here are two sites that will help you… (By the way, subscribe to both lists because the people on the early bird list will definitely get hooked up)
