New “Gmail Priority Inbox” Changes Email Marketing Forever…

Before you read or watch anything on this page, I want you to watch google’s new video about their “priority inbox.”

Alright right off the bat you can look at this in many ways. (My personal opinion is that it will be awesome… but only if you are awesome too.

Let’s just make a few observations about this, then I’ll give you a little video showing you how to exploit it…

  • People hate SPAM, and google also hate’s SPAM… (I’m not sure if you noticed, but in the video there’s a message titled “special offer” that is right next to spam)
  • Like I always say and will continue to say, behavioral targeting technology is going to influence almost everything you see online for the indefinite future…
  • Google’s undying obsession (and our demand for it as users) with “user experience” is going to change what you have to do to make email marketing work… if people on your list have gmail.
  • It’s all about from fields and subject lines… watch the video for tips on what to do with it and how to be better…

Going the extra inch…

I love the idea of going the extra mile.
It get’s you to do a whole lot of right things,
that ultimately end up making life awesome all around.

But here’s kind of a cool little truth
I’ve discovered…

You don’t have to go the extra mile to be vastly more successful
than most of the people on the planet, at anything.

All you need is to go the extra inch.

What I mean is that, like Napolean Hill says
in “Think And Grow Rich” most people stop
3 feet from gold.

This may be over simplifying it, but you could
say that the secret to success is to just do a little more
than most people are willing to do or are already doing,
and you’ll win.

It’s like the old story about two friends hiking in the forrest…

They see a bear, and start running.

One friend shouts to the other, “there’s no way you can out run a bear!”

The other friend shouts back, ” I don’t have to, I just have to out run you!”

And that’s the truth.

If you want to win in business and in life, you probably only need to be a little bit better than the next best.

Every once in a while you’ll have break throughs that are game changers and
totally shift the paradigm and change everything… Those are great moments.

But along the way, just remember to go the extra inch.

If you can be just a little better today than yesterday… A little better than the next best competitor… And do that consistently where you’ll end up is amazing.

I’ve just found that the consistency part is what’s tricky.  You need help, encouragement and fuel to keep going all the time.

And that’s why I put together Entrepreneur Inspiration Monthly.

It gives you the insight, inspiration, and ideas to get yourself to go that extra inch.

I know it may not solve every problem you have or give you all the answers… Who can? What does?

I do know that these interviews give me an extra inch every time I do them, and every time I re-listen.

So, why not try it out?  It’s only $7 bucks and if you don’t like it in the first month,
let me know and we’ll get your money back to you and you’ll never be billed again.

All Traffic Is Purchased: there is no such thing as free traffic

This is the truest way I can put it.

Free Traffic does not exist. In fact, I believe the word free can be very detrimental to your overall mindset.  It is one of the most potent and powerful words in marketing, if not the most, and that is why it’s actually regulated, but I digress…

“There is no free traffic. Traffic is only either profitable or not, it is never free…”

Here’s the deal, when it comes to getting traffic to your website there is no such thing as free.

The closest thing to free would be sending a message to your email or twitter list.

Even those things are not free.

The correct way to think about it is different types of traffic are purchased with different currencies.  Often times what we confuse with, “Free” is actually just a different currency, like time or content.

If you have a big following in social media, there is a 100% guarantee you did something and expended some resource to get it and to maintain it.  If you’ve posted to twitter 20 times a day 5 days a week for the last 6 months, that time, attention, and energy was your cost.  That traffic may have in actuality been more expensive.

If you’re going for search engine traffic, non-paid AKA organic.  That is not free.

You are paying google with credibility, content and creating a site that provides the user experience that gets them to have people searching in the first place.  In effect, google is saying we’ll pay you with traffic if you create stuff people like and want to see, and that is useful enough to them to keep drawing them back into our search engine.

But it’s not free.

Many times, the resource you trade for traffic that is purchased with currency other than money is time and effort, and the risk that you could be using those resources in a different way or for a higher value activity.

This is why, I like to say, sometimes free traffic is very expensive.

Not always, don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of ways that it makes a lot of sense, email lists, joint ventures, paying affiliates, etc.  Just don’t forget to truly evaluate the cost.  If it’s easy and free now, chances are you or someone did something that cost a good amount of some curency in the past.

The fastest and often cheapest, easiest way to buy traffic and test whether or not things are working, is to buy it with money not time.

If this is interesting to you, you’ll love something I have coming out in the near future. I’m not sure of the details yet but here are two sites that will help you… (By the way, subscribe to both lists because the people on the early bird list will definitely get hooked up)

The Highest Leverage Online Advertising Focus

This is going to be rapid fire, short quick.

Here’s the basic jist of it all.

Over the past few months, a couple of friends of mine and I have talked more and more about how much of a crock and a crap shoot it is to focus on search engine marketing, and how funny and rediculous it is to think that you aren’t doing search engine marketing when you are taught to do video submissions, article marketing, whatever.  It is all based on getting your site infront of people typing in keywords.

There are some big problems with that, and this isn’t necessarily the place to discuss that.  I actually have a webinar called the dark side of SEM, where I’ll explain this in more detail.

So, here’s my point.  Making money online is as simple as getting the right people on a page that says the right thing so they give you their money for your product, or the action you get paid for.

Basically, it comes down to getting traffic and getting it to convert, to do what you want it to do… (i.e. take actions that make you money)

Since that’s the case the traffic part almost always seems to be an issue for people.  It’s kind of like cracking a code to a combination lock.  As soon as you have all the numbers dialed in, you are home free and you are off to the races.  I have to tell you, when you do crack it, there is nothing cooler.  You know that for every visitor you get, you’ll make $____.__ in profit.  It’s awesome.

Now I need you to follow me on two more points here.

1. The easiest, best most scaleable way to get more traffic, is to buy it.  If you want to know why I’ll link to another post or video that explains it.

2. If you’re going to buy or create traffic on demand, doesn’t it make sense to focus on the type of traffic that is the most valuable, highest leverage, most important type of traffic to figure out.  I mean the kind that will serve you the most traffic, the longest and is most scale able?  Obviously my answer to that question is yes, so you might be wondering, what is that type of traffic?

I think my answer will surprise you.  The great thing about it is, this isn’t going to change, it’s nothing new.  It’s evolving and will always continue to advance but more or less this will stay around for the inevitable future.  I dare say, this will always be here.

So what is this traffic source? Banners.

Adding a second, the other king is email.

There is no question that you need to actually master both and learn how to combine them correctly and effectively.

Let me tell you why I’m saying this.  After being so indoctrinated in doing search engine marketing (which I still love and drive a lot of quality highly profitable traffic with) I have made a critical distinction and differentiation in my understanding.

Optimizing your site purely for search engines is stupid and it’s not a business.

Optimizing your site and business for sales, and building a monetization process is smart.

This entire issue came up on a call with a client today and I had to bring sense back to myself and everyone involved in the conversation.  We have put this sales process in front of many different types of traffic and we got a lot of different types of results. We actually did really well with search, but there were some complications, and limits, and it was turning out to be a whole lot of work.

To make a long story short, I finally ended up saying, “look!” Cracking the code with anything other than display advertising (banners) has way less value and limits.  If we can optimize and figure it out on banners, the amount of traffic is virtually unlimited, and we can scale for a long, long time.”

And that’s the truth my friend.
I guess I need to explain this even better and I will over time, but here is the truth.  Crack the conversion code on banner advertising and display and you will be set for a long long time.  Add email into the mix and you have almost all the on demand traffic you can handle.  By the way, if you aren’t getting all that banner traffic to an opt in page and following up, you’re missing the point.

The system is two parts.

By banner ads to get clicks and opt ins, and usually make enough sales to break even or generate a profit.  Then follow up in email to make more sales and more profit.

That’s all of it boiled down to the essence of the biggest traffic and profit drivers online.  Email, banners.  Figure those two out and you really won’t ever need much else.

Please ask questions, make comments, etc.  Please disagree with me, if you do.  I’d love to clarify and explain further and better articulate this, but I think a question or two is needed to make it happen.

How To Get Traffic

You get traffic by putting up ads. Plain and simple.

Let me explain the obvious overtone, and follow it with the counter intuitive undertone reality.

It’s not as complicated as we make it.  This was a huge realization for me though when I saw it in this simple perspective.

There are at least 4 steps for someone to get to your website:
1- They have to get online

2- The have to either type your website into their browser, or click on something to get them there. (Even if they google your domain name and click on the link in google, they just took two steps.)

3- Most of the time, they’re clicking on something to bring themselves back to the site.  These links are called ads.

4- Every link that brings someone to your website is an ad, to get traffic all you have to do is learn the rules for getting the right links in front of the right people.

Let me explain and it will get even simpler.  Unless people are turning on their computer, opening their web browser, and typing in your domain name, they are going to get to your website from something that prompts them, reminds them, helps them, or tells them to do so.  In other words, probably almost every single person who ever comes to any website you own, is probably going to get there by being somewhere else first, and then clicking a link in that place and arriving at your site.  If they don’t come in by clicking something, they’ll come because they heard about you somewhere or from someone.

So, these links are ads.  All  you have to do is learn the rules to get your links in the places the people who you want to talk to, are.

Example: SEO is an ad, there are a whole bunch of rules and stuff about the page, the other pages that link to it, the keywords, and the whole bit.  Bottom line, getting that link into google is an ad, there is a complex set up rules to get it there.

Twitter traffic?  Yes, little tiny ads, lot’s of unspoken and spoken rules about what works and what doesn’t.

Email marketing, same thing.

Paid Traffic: This is my favorite because it actually has the least rules – give ad network money, an actual “Ad” like we would all define it, and tell them who you want it shown to.  Then, you get traffic.

So, money + ad + targeting = traffic.

I know this all sounds too simple, and to a certain degree it is.  But that’s the truth, if you think about it.  Pretty much everyone who ever comes to your site, is coming from somewhere else for some other reason.  How do you put your links there.  Learn the rules, and repeat the process over and over and over again, and you’ll have lot’s and lot’s of traffic.

Here’s the counter intuitive more complex way of looking at it:

The real way you get traffic, is to make a sales process that converts and gives people something they want bad enough to pay money for.

The equation is:

VALUE PEOPLE WILL PAY FOR + PROPER PERSUASION = MORE TRAFFIC THAN YOU CAN HANDLE

When you do this, people want to link to you, you can afford to buy ads everywhere, affiliates want to promote for you, and the list goes on and on and on.  The way to get a lot of traffic, is to have something that is not only worth talking about for interest and curiosity’s sake, but because it’s profitable to do so.  When you do this, you have scalability problems, not traffic problems.

Google Adwords Search Funnels: AdTechnology Advancement

I have to say that I am not necesarily the most technicaly savy or capable person around.  However, I find technology and understanding how things work, and what does not work to be the very drivers of the innovations that create value in our world.  Getting to the edge of where there aren’t any perfect answers any more, I think is necessary for truly creating value as an entrepreneur.

So What Do Search Funnels Mean To You, And How Can You Use Them To Grow Your Business?

1- It’s about data.  I think first and foremost, understanding how users interact with you, how people search literaly gives you a view of the prospects mind.  There is probably no more often quoted saying in the ad world than Robert Collier’s “Enter The Conversation In The Mind Of Your Prospect.” This literally allows you to do that.

2- For a long time before technology caught up, we didn;t have the capability to track and measure behavior to a degree that we could measure ROI.  That is all changing now.  There was a time when I would say that branding was worthless unless you were a multi-billion dollar company, etc.  Not so true anymore.  Between, google adding it’s “audiences” feature, and the current influx and craze (which I don’t think is a craze at all) for re-marketing, we are really seeing a shift. A shift from only paying for the exact moment that converts, to creating and controlling the entire user experience both on and off of virtual real estate you control.

For Example: If we know that every user searches for “used cars” before they buy from any dealer ship, then it may be worth having an ad there, followed by a geographic specific ad, and an ad for a specific model of car.  If you combine re-marketing and the data from these funnels, you can start to engage the consumer earlier and be the first to form the relationship and ultimately win the sale.

Bottom Line: These changes and advancements in sophistication are just more evidence of why and how necessary it is that you really know and use your numbers.  If you don’t know what a customer is worth and how much you are willing to pay to acquire them, you’re screwed.  Plain and simple.  There are just too many sharks that will and can eat you alive.

It also brings to light the point that it’s necessary to focus so much more on customer value and conversion than just about anything else.  The paradox is, having a high customer value can give you the room, time, and capital you need to figure out conversions. While the opposite, isn’t always true.

If you want to get better at your numbers, I made a video and a special FREE spread sheet software for you that will instantly give you insight into your business and traffic and strategy that you never have had before.  It’s called “3 Magic Numbers, and you can get it by entering your email here.
